The Brief

An Immersive Fusion of Light, Sound, and Place

The vision for this project was to create an immersive and unparalleled audiovisual experience that would push the boundaries of projection mapping. The challenge lay in transforming the intricately structured and tide-bound St. Aubin’s Fort into a seamless, animated spectacle, while ensuring the visuals and live music from the Radiophonic Workshop merged into a cohesive and mesmerizing performance. Working from 3D-scanned data provided by QED, NOVAK was tasked with interpreting an exceptionally complex UV map—a digital blueprint of the fort—to develop a workflow that would allow for the intuitive creation of animations that responded dynamically to the fort’s rugged, multi-faceted structure.

Our Response

A Spectacular Island-Wide Transformation

Once NOVAK had mastered the technical complexities of the projection surface, attention turned to the creative concept. Taking inspiration from the festival’s theme of Make Your Own Island, they developed a series of cinematic scenes that reflected both the history of Jersey and the iconic TV programs scored by the Radiophonic Workshop. These visuals explored fantasy landscapes, historical narratives, and the legacy of the fort itself, intertwining reality with imagination. Throughout the process, NOVAK collaborated closely with the Radiophonic Workshop, allowing the visuals and soundtrack to evolve in harmony. The result was an epic and otherworldly experience, where the bold, immersive animations blended seamlessly with the Radiophonic Workshop’s sonic brilliance. When combined with the technical expertise of QED, the performance became a projection mapping spectacle unlike any other, wowing the crowds that lined the Jersey coastline to witness this breathtaking event.

"The Make Your Own Island projection mapping event was the perfect way to close Branchage 2014, and NOVAK’s talent, vision and understanding of the island’s cultural and architectural heritage ensured that this most ambitious of projects was executed perfectly. A blend of innovation, ambition and artistry resulted in a stunning show on St Aubin’s Fort, the likes of which had never been seen before and may never be seen again!"
