A Digital Storytelling Experience with Dippy

As part of Dippy on Tour at Newcastle’s Great North Museum, NOVAK was commissioned to design an innovative projection installation that reimagined traditional museum interpretation. Instead of standard information boards, this immersive installation combined physical vinyl design with projection and sound to create a thought-provoking experience. The installation explored the pressing theme of extinction, illustrating how natural climate change led to the demise of Dippy’s species while drawing a stark parallel to the modern-day threat of human-driven climate change. Projected alongside the iconic traveling dinosaur for the duration of his stay, this audiovisual experience offered visitors a compelling and urgent perspective on the past, present, and future of our planet.

The Brief

Connecting Prehistoric Extinction to Today’s Climate Crisis

The goal was to move beyond traditional museum interpretation and create a visually engaging and emotionally impactful installation that would enhance visitors’ understanding of extinction and climate change. The installation needed to bridge the prehistoric past with contemporary environmental challenges, making scientific concepts more accessible and engaging to a wide audience. NOVAK was tasked with designing an installation that would seamlessly integrate with Dippy’s exhibition, utilizing projection mapping, physical design, and sound to tell a compelling story in an innovative way.

Our Response

A Multi-Layered Storytelling Experience

NOVAK developed a visually striking installation that combined printed vinyl graphics with projection mapping and an evocative soundscape. This hybrid approach allowed for an ever-evolving visual narrative that highlighted key moments in Earth’s history while reinforcing the urgent need for climate action today. The projected content evolved alongside the physical space, immersing visitors in the story of Dippy’s extinction and making clear the parallels to our own environmental crisis. The accompanying sound design, created in collaboration with Ed Carter, further deepened the emotional impact of the experience. By transforming scientific information into an engaging and immersive audiovisual installation, NOVAK’s work provided a fresh and compelling way for visitors to connect with Dippy’s story—one that resonated far beyond the walls of the museum. A special thanks to the Great North Museum team, Ed Carter, Incite Design, and ArtAV for their collaboration on this project.
