A Poetic Call to Action
Earth Calls was the 2021 edition of Message From The Skies, a striking audio-visual installation that delivered a poetic response to the climate emergency. Featuring new writing from Anna Fleming, Andrés N. Ordorica, and Mara Menzies, the piece combined powerful narration with an evocative soundscape by composer Calum Paterson and stunning projection design by NOVAK and Hazel Dunn. Presented as part of Edinburgh’s Hogmanay, the installation illuminated Trinity Apse near the Royal Mile from January 19th to 25th, 2022, transforming the historic space into a platform for urgent environmental storytelling.

The Brief
Amplifying Voices for the Planet
Message From The Skies, organized by Underbelly, is an annual project that blends literature, sound, and projection mapping to present stories in a bold, public format. For the 2021 edition, the challenge was to create an immersive piece that would inspire reflection and action in response to the climate crisis. The writing needed to be brought to life visually and sonically in a way that would resonate deeply with audiences and make an impact within the winter landscape of Edinburgh.

Our Response
Illuminating Words, Inspiring Change
NOVAK, in collaboration with Hazel Dunn, crafted a dynamic projection design that transformed Trinity Apse into a canvas for urgent storytelling. The visuals seamlessly integrated with the spoken word, enhancing the emotional weight of the narrative while immersing audiences in an atmospheric and thought-provoking experience. Calum Paterson’s layered soundscape added further depth, reinforcing the themes of the climate crisis with an evocative auditory backdrop. By fusing poetry, sound, and projection in a stunning public setting, Earth Calls became a powerful artistic statement—one that urged viewers to listen, reflect, and take action for the future of our planet.
