A Celebration of Rouken Glen’s Textile Heritage

Commissioned as part of Electric Glen 2016, NOVAK, in collaboration with textile designer Hazel Dunn and lighting designers Light Refreshment, created Printworks—a 40-meter-long audiovisual projection that paid homage to the rich textile history of Thornliebank Printworks. Inspired by the intricate patterns once produced on the site of Rouken Glen Park, East Renfrewshire, this large-scale digital artwork merged the past with the present. Featuring a soundtrack by Ed Carter, Printworks reimagined the historic designs of Thornliebank in a bold, modern visual spectacle.

The Brief

Bringing 19th-Century Textiles to Life

Rouken Glen Park was once the private estate of the Crum family, owners of the Thornliebank Printworks, a company renowned for its vibrant dyes and high-quality prints. Powered by the Auldhouse Burn, which provided essential water for dyeing and printing, Thornliebank exported calico fabrics worldwide throughout the 19th century. The commission aimed to honor this creative and commercial legacy by transforming the historical designs into a dynamic digital artwork, celebrating the artistry of the past through a contemporary lens.
