Illuminating History at New Lanark
Shining Lives was a breathtaking projection, sound, and light event staged at the New Lanark World Heritage Site. Taking place on 21 & 22 October 2017, the spectacle drew an estimated 4,000 visitors, who witnessed the 230-year-old mill buildings transformed into a living canvas of history and storytelling. Using large-scale projection, historic imagery, and immersive audio, Shining Lives brought to life the rich industrial heritage of New Lanark, capturing the essence of its workers, the mills, and the surrounding landscape in a truly evocative and grand-scale experience.

Shining Lives was a breathtaking projection, sound, and light event staged at the New Lanark World Heritage Site. The Brief
Bridging Past and Present Through Light and Sound
The objective of Shining Lives was to reinterpret the history of New Lanark in an engaging and immersive way, blending tangible historical artifacts with an intangible sense of community, culture, and legacy. NOVAK’s challenge was to transform the architecture of New Lanark into a dynamic storytelling medium—projecting archival images, historical video footage, and specially crafted animations onto the mill’s façade. These visuals needed to be enhanced by a bespoke soundtrack, lighting design, and live-action elements, evoking the daily lives of the workers who shaped the site's history.

NOVAK crafted a multi-layered narrative experience, seamlessly integrating historical visuals with innovative projection mapping techniques. The heritage architecture became an immersive storytelling device, transporting audiences through New Lanark’s industrial past. The projection mapping reimagined the mill buildings as a moving tapestry of workers’ lives, spinning machinery, and local landscapes. A custom soundtrack and lighting design deepened the emotional impact, enveloping the audience in an atmospheric journey through time. Living history performances added a human dimension, blending real-world presence with the digital spectacle to create a truly immersive and captivating event. Through Shining Lives, NOVAK not only celebrated the history of New Lanark but also redefined the way heritage can be experienced—transforming a UNESCO World Heritage Site into a canvas of light, memory, and imagination.
