A Symphonic Fusion of Light and Sound

TECTONIC was an immersive audio-visual installation that transformed the interior of Doncaster Minster through large-scale projection mapping and an intricately composed soundscape. Created by NOVAK and Ed Carter in collaboration with Right Up Your Street, the installation reimagined the Minster’s architectural details as a dynamic visual canvas, highlighting and reshaping its intricate structural elements through light and motion. Presented as part of the DN Festival of Light from November 22 to 27, 2019, TECTONIC invited audiences to experience the interplay between architecture, sound, and movement in a breathtakingly immersive way.

The Brief

Revealing the Hidden Rhythm of Architecture

The objective was to create a site-specific artwork that would enhance and transform the stunning upper interior of Doncaster Minster. The installation needed to engage with the Minster’s unique structure, using projection mapping to accentuate its detailed features while creating a sense of transformation and movement. Additionally, the soundscape had to work in harmony with the visuals, exploring how rhythm, dynamics, and spatial awareness are experienced not only through sound but also visually and physically in relation to the built environment. The goal was to create a multi-sensory experience that would leave audiences with a renewed appreciation for the Minster’s architecture and its relationship to light and sound.

Our Response

A Cathedral of Light and Motion

NOVAK’s approach to TECTONIC was deeply rooted in the architectural nuances of Doncaster Minster. By mapping projections onto its upper interior, the installation brought new life to the space, revealing hidden patterns and structures through shifting visuals and evolving light formations. The projections seamlessly augmented the existing design, creating an ever-changing visual narrative that responded to the grandeur of the Minster’s architecture. Ed Carter’s accompanying soundscape was composed in direct response to the visuals, using layered textures and rhythmic variations to heighten the immersive effect. The interplay of sound and imagery allowed audiences to experience the Minster in an entirely new way—one that blended history with contemporary digital artistry, reinforcing the dynamic relationship between space, light, and sound. TECTONIC stood as a testament to the power of digital projection and sound design to transform historic spaces, offering a fresh and mesmerizing perspective on one of Doncaster’s most iconic landmarks.
