A Choral Reimagining of a Classical Masterpiece
The World How Wide is a unique reinterpretation of Vaughan Williams’ Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis, transforming the orchestral classic into a stunning choral arrangement. Performed by the Chorus of Royal Northern Sinfonia, alongside Quay Voices, The World How Wide Community Chorus, and a string quartet from the Royal Northern Sinfonia, this breathtaking performance was accompanied by a specially commissioned film by NOVAK. The film served as a visual celebration of the natural landscapes of the North East of England, enhancing the ethereal beauty of the music with imagery that reflected themes of vastness, wonder, and connection to the land.

The Brief
Uniting Music and Landscape in a Poetic Vision
The project sought to reimagine Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis in a new and deeply expressive way—transforming it into a choral work while pairing it with stunning visuals that captured the majesty of the North East’s landscapes. NOVAK was commissioned to create a film that would complement and enhance the music, mirroring its depth, emotion, and sense of place. The brief called for a poetic visual interpretation that would weave together themes of nature, time, and human connection.

Our Response
A Cinematic and Musical Journey Through Nature
NOVAK’s film for The World How Wide was crafted as a visual meditation on the beauty and expansiveness of the North East’s landscapes. Using sweeping aerial shots, intimate close-ups, and atmospheric compositions, the film paralleled the music’s soaring harmonies and intricate textures, creating an immersive experience that deepened the emotional impact of the performance. Through a delicate balance of movement, light, and natural imagery, the film brought to life the grandeur and serenity of the region, seamlessly blending with the choral arrangement to create a transcendent artistic experience. This collaboration between music and visuals offered audiences a fresh and evocative perspective on Vaughan Williams’ masterpiece, celebrating both the power of the human voice and the breathtaking landscapes that inspired it.
