A Manuscript’s Timeless Journey
The Lindisfarne Gospels, one of the most remarkable manuscripts to survive from Anglo-Saxon England, embarks on a symbolic journey every seven years from the British Library in London to a venue in the North East of England. In 2022, this treasured artifact was exhibited at the Laing Art Gallery in Newcastle upon Tyne, offering visitors an opportunity to experience its historical and cultural significance up close. Pivotal to the wider exhibition of this treasured manuscript was Tidal, a dramatic and thought provoking interpretation piece created by NOVAK. This audio visual experience transformed the opening gallery and transported audiences to locations and landscapes central to the narrative of the Lindisfarne Gospels, providing them with a deeper understanding of the book's origins and it’s history.

The Brief
Revealing a Sacred Legacy
NOVAK was tasked with creating a ‘digital installation’ that would serve as the entry point to the exhibition, and would delve into the manuscript’s origins, the inspirations behind its creation, and the journey it took from its birthplace on Lindisfarne, the Holy Island. The aim was to provide an engaging and informative experience for both audiences who were familiar with the story of the gospels and those not.

Our Response
A Journey Through Place and Time
NOVAK designed and produced an immersive audio-visual installation that brought the story of the Lindisfarne Gospels to life. Using floor-to-ceiling projections, the installation depicted the places and landscapes central to the book's narrative, examining its origins and the influences that shaped the manuscript, alongside a visual exploration of its journey across time and place. The projections were accompanied by a layered soundscape featuring improvisational music, sound design, and newly scripted narration. This harmonious blend of media created an evocative and multi-sensory experience, allowing visitors to connect deeply with the rich history and enduring legacy of the Lindisfarne Gospels.
